My Complete Guide to Outdoor Flooring in Dubai That Survives Sun and Sand
Outdoor flooring in Dubai is a different world. The sun beats down. Sand blows in. Rain is rare but when it comes, it floods. I have tried almost every outdoor flooring option. Some failed within months. Others are still perfect after years. Here is my complete guide.
What Does Not Work Outdoors
I learned the hard way that indoor flooring does not belong outside. I saw a neighbor install wooden decking on his terrace. Within one summer, the wood had grayed, cracked, and developed splinters. Wood outdoors in Dubai requires constant oiling and sealing. Few people keep up with it.
I also tried outdoor carpet on my balcony. The carpet trapped sand and moisture. Mold grew underneath. The color faded to gray. After one year, it smelled musty. I ripped it out.
Cheap porcelain tiles can also fail outdoors if they are not rated for exterior use. The water absorption rate must be below 0.1% for outdoor tiles. Many indoor tiles absorb more. When water freezes (rare but possible in winter), the tiles crack. Even without freezing, efflorescence can appear as white stains.
What Works: Porcelain Outdoor Tiles
The best outdoor flooring I have found is outdoor flooring made of rectified porcelain. The tiles are thick (20mm or more) and have a high slip resistance (R11 or higher). The surface is textured but not rough. I installed 600x600mm outdoor porcelain on my terrace.
The tiles are installed on pedestals or on a mortar bed. I used pedestals because they allow water to drain and air to circulate. The pedestals are adjustable so I could level the terrace despite a slope. The tiles are loose-laid, not glued. This means I can lift them to access the drain below.
After three years, the tiles look new. No fading, no cracks, no stains. The surface gets hot in summer but not as hot as concrete. I can walk barefoot in the morning and evening. At noon, I wear sandals.
Artificial Grass for Outdoor Spaces
For my garden, I chose artificial grass. I covered the entire area with high-quality synthetic turf. The grass has UV protection and heat-reflective technology. The surface temperature is about 10°C cooler than standard artificial grass.
The grass is installed on a compacted sub-base with drainage. Water from rain or irrigation passes through. The grass does not get muddy. The kids play on it every day. After five years, the color is still green. A few fibers have flattened, but a power brush revives them.
The only caution is that artificial grass can get hot in direct summer sun. I installed a misting system that cools the air. I also have shade sails over part of the garden. In the hottest hours, stay indoors.
Outdoor Swimming Pool Mats
Around my pool, I needed a surface that is non-slip, quick-drying, and comfortable underfoot. I found outdoor swimming pool mats made of EVA foam or rubber. These mats click together like puzzle pieces. They have drainage holes so water does not pool.
The mats are soft enough to cushion bare feet. They do not get slippery when wet. The colors include stone and wood looks. I used gray mats that match the pool coping. The mats have been outside for two years. No fading, no cracking.
For the pool deck, I also installed anti slip swimming pool mats with extra grip. These are thicker and have a textured surface. I placed them at the pool steps and the ladder area. Safety first.
Rubber Playground Tiles for Kids
My kids have a play area in the garden. I covered the ground with rubber playground tiles. These are 25mm thick interlocking rubber squares. They provide fall protection. The tiles are porous so water drains. They are also UV-stable.
The rubber tiles have been a lifesaver. My kids fall constantly. No injuries. The tiles are easy to clean. I hose them down. They dry quickly. The colors are bright and have not faded after three years.
The only downside is that rubber tiles can smell when new. The smell fades after a few weeks. Buy from a reputable supplier who uses virgin rubber, not recycled tire rubber. Recycled rubber can have steel wires and a stronger odor.
Stone Wall Cladding for Outdoor Walls
My garden has a retaining wall that looked ugly. I covered it with stone wall cladding. The cladding is thin slices of natural stone glued to the wall. The stone is sealed to resist moisture and fading.
The cladding transformed the wall. It looks expensive but cost me 150 AED per square meter. Installation took two days. The stone does not absorb heat as much as concrete. The wall stays cooler. I also used external stone cladding on the barbecue area. The stone resists grease and heat.
For stone cladding wall, ensure the wall is clean and dry. Use a flexible adhesive designed for outdoor use. Seal the stone after installation. Reseal every two years.
Maintenance of Outdoor Flooring
Outdoor flooring requires regular maintenance. I sweep my terrace weekly to remove sand. I hose down the tiles monthly. For the artificial grass, I use a leaf blower to remove debris. I brush the fibers every few months.
The rubber playground tiles need occasional power washing. Mold can grow in the pores if the area is shaded. I spray a diluted bleach solution once a year. Rinse thoroughly.
For stone cladding, I inspect the seals annually. If water no longer beads on the surface, I apply a new coat of sealer. This takes one hour for a large wall.
Final Thoughts on Outdoor Flooring
Do not cut corners on outdoor flooring. Cheap materials will fail quickly in Dubai's climate. Invest in quality porcelain, artificial grass, or rubber tiles. Hire experienced installers. And plan for drainage. Standing water is the enemy of all outdoor floors.
My outdoor spaces are now usable all year. I spend evenings on the terrace, weekends in the garden, and afternoons by the pool. The right flooring made all the difference. I hope my experiences help you create outdoor spaces you love.
